New initiatives at Chicago’s two airports are designed to make them more environmentally friendly.
The Chicago Department of Aviation announced the initiatives on Monday. They include the development of a solar panel installation and fueling station that relies on alternative fuels like ethanol and compressed natural gas at O’Hare International Airport.
Midway International Airport will launch a composting program for about a dozen restaurants.
Airport officials say they’ll accept proposals on the solar panels at O’Hare. They envision up to 60 acres of ground-mounted panels around O’Hare.
Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino says the panels will provide substantial renewable energy.
