Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL), India’s major importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is reported to be in discussion with automotive manufacturers Tata Motors Limited (TML) and Ashok Leyland, about the introduction of LNG for vehicles, according to a Business Standard article.

A K Balyan, managing director and CEO of PLL, told Business Standard the manuacturers have been offered an opportunity to conduct a pilot program at Petronet’ s facilities in Dahej, Gujarat, where a pilot LNG storage hub / filling station will be set up in the near future.

LNG is being mooted as a cheaper fuel with particular application for buses, trucks and waste collection vehicles, being more attractive than CNG because the density of fuel offers extended operating ranges.

A spokesperson from TML’ s New Product Development unit confirmed with NGV Global the company’s interest in LNG as a viable transportation fuel, but emphasised such considerations were only at a very early stage of exploration.
